Fertilisation in human

Fertilisation: fusion of the nucleus of a male gamete with the nucleus of a female gamete, producing a new cell called a zygote.

This then matures into an embryo. [1]

Process of developing zygote

1. One sperm penetrates the ovum

2. Ovum membrane alters to form barrier against sperm

3. Head of sperm (male nucleus) approaches and then fuses with the nucleus of the ovum.

4. Zygote divides over and over, to make a ball of cells called an embryo.

5. It implants itself in the wall of the nucleus (implantation) which is followed by conception [2]

[2] From Znotes CIE IGCSE Biology - 16.11 Fertilization

How do sperm cells reach eggs

1. The human female reproductive system working during reproduction and fertilisation.

The egg is released from the ovary and moves toward the oviduct.

2. The egg cell is released from the ovary into the oviduct.

A sperm has been ejaculated into the vagina and is travelling up the cervix.

The egg and sperm meet at the oviduct. [3]
